Precious Ndubisi on Chimamanda Adichie's "A Danger to a single story"

In the video “ The Danger of a single story” by Chimamanda Adichie, she stated a point about how Mexicans have a  “single story” in her mind became the object of immigrants. Adichie also pointed her first day in Mexico and how she was surprised to see that Mexicans are actually hard workers and that brought another different thought to her mind. She bought a single story about Mexicans and that was how people makeup a single story showing people one thing over and over again.

Adichie warns the audience against the misunderstanding of others, an example was how she misunderstood the Mexicans as people “ fleecing the healthcare program”, bringing in all sorts of illegal things into the U.S, but after siting Mexico she noticed she was wrong and that’s why this  generation needs to stop misrepresentation and stereotyping facts about a certain cultures.

I can also relate to Adichie’s statement about the stereotypical Mexicans. You know how most Mexicans always have a big family, so I always think that all Mexicans have a big family until I visited my friend and they were only three in the family. Ever since then, I tried not to stereotype Mexicans anymore.

Our current President( Trump) made a speech about Mexicans saying that they are stealing the American jobs, rapists, drug dealers and killers. Below is a link to a video of what Trump stated about Mexicans.

This is the connection to what Adichie spoke about having a single story in your mind that reflects over and over again. Trump didn’t see anything positive about Mexicans and made such an unethical speech about Mexicans.

Why do people including the educated ones sometimes have a single story about how they view other cultures?
