Anta Diop on “Introduction” to Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy

In this text, the authors made a point about how women and men in Sri Lankan villages who migrate to other countries, had to reestablish gender roles regarding whether women can work abroad and also take care of their children at home. Men did not fell comfortable taking on women's duties in the house.

I think that the authors perspective of the issue of the problem with whether women can migrate to work and take care of their family is strong. She informs us of the issue but she could have also added to her point how men have taken care of their family after the women migrated to another country. Whether or not the men took on the women's roles would have been very useful to her argument.

The authors could have also stated how when the immigrants got to the other countries, they were not able to provide for their families like the though they would be able to. This occurs because these women are not getting paid enough to fully support their family.

Outside of the classroom and on television I have always seen female immigrants taking on jobs as nannies and housemaids while men mostly take on jobs that require hard labor. These women eave their native county to work for citizens and barely get paid anything. Most of the time they are leaving their families and their children back home and are not making enough to provide for them. This is usually depicted in the Hispanic or Latino community. An example of immigrant women taking on household jobs would be the show on Lifetime Devious Maids. All of  the women in this show are immigrants from Latin America.

What can be done to change the portrayal of certain jobs that both male and female immigrants can take on?

  1. I loved your take on the "Global Women" piece! I felt like we both had the same understanding of the piece in regard to the concept of women traveling to other countries to fulfill "women's work". The fact that women are expected to fulfill gender roles that their male counterparts could easily take on is astounding. However, what's even worse is that, once women of privilege are able to relieve themselves of these tasks, they are then imposed on to women who aren't given nearly as many advantages, and these women especially consist of these immigrants. I loved how you articulated all of these concepts; this is a really great blog!
