Ciere Welton on "How Trump Won By Becoming The Ultimate Brand"

In the book, "How Trump Won By Becoming The Ultimate Brand", Naomi Klein suggests that Trump's administration or presidency be portrayed as a "ferocious backlash against the rising power of overlapping social and political movements demanding a more just and safer world."

The concept I cannot grasp is how the many industries that were standing up and wanted their voices heard for the better, and were actually beginning to receive attention for their discourse is deemed a nuisance. I suppose that because white supremacy was far from the limelight and for a split second deemed out of control, Trump in some peculiar way had to win the presidency. The matters that began to arise publicly were not matters that were of benefit to white supremacy. Therefor resulting in the act of white supremacists delegating the majority control of the government to further benefit no one else but themselves.

What's more astonishing is that so many "Americans" are routing for such an unjust leader. What is the true meaning behind "unity" if the government favors industries and political forces that are of benefit to their liking. Is it the hushing of the "Black Lives Matter" organizations, or the women movements who just want their voices heard about their rights. These organizations and movements were all on the brink of succeeding at just being recognized by the public for better living and a better world.

In August 2016, Colin Kaepernick was noticed for protesting at his games during the National Anthem. Kaepernick's response was, "I am not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." In response to Kaepernick's silent protest, there was an uproar about how disrespectful he is and how ungrateful he is to the country and so many who have fought for the country. The connection here is Kaepernick was dismissed from his team for just speaking up against unjust issues in our country. He was ultimately hushed because forbid this black man try to make a change in a country that is suppose to only benefit white supremacy. His message was tarnished into something "disrespectful"  or wrong instead of powerful and moving. So again I ask what does "unity" truly stand for in our country?

Why is Kaepernick being scrutinized for demanding a better world for all people in "our" country?

  1. I really like everything about your blogpost. As a country, we've lost our unity. We're split down the middle fighting for different things, our opinions pushing us further and further apart. Matters that are important keep getting pushed to the side, forgotten about. And concerning the last paragraph: it ties into the reading, and shows a recent event that is overlooked when approaching this topic. You posed a question that is currently very problematic in America; where did we go wrong as Americans when it comes to unity?
