Precious Ndubisi on Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Hochschild “Introduction” to Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy

In Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Hochschild Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy, she stated that men predominated in labor migrate to northern Europe from Turkey, Greece, and north Africa. She also stated that half of the worlds 120 million legal migrants are now believed to be women. Most illegal immigrants that get the jobs are men compared to women, who have to work extra hard and still get paid less than men.

Her argument led me to think that Feminization of migration has a big impact in todays world which some people really don't know about. This is a trend towards a higher percentage of women among voluntary migrants. The impact that Feminization of migration has made is that if the women are legal migrants, if they are uneducated, if they are poor, if they have support at home for their children or other dependents, and if corporations work in a legal environment are designed to protect their human rights. There are individual examples to provide evidence about these topics, even though some articles have proven the same studies but there is not enough hard evidence that would help make immigrant policy a priority.

I like how she mentioned immigrant women instead of women in general because, both immigrants and non immigrant women struggle with the same situation of being paid less than men but illegal immigrant women have to suffer more because they are non citizens and are not given the same opportunities .

Like in the movie we watched in class, illegal women who worked at the sweatshops were paid less but are still expected to work fulltime as a mom. The sweatshops in El Salvador and Bangladesh were profiting from this hardworking women. They used them for their own gain. Even though some of the women had husbands they still agree to be paid less than minimum wage.

In the news I saw that immigrants in America work more, search for jobs more and get paid way less than native-born U.S. citizens. The reason is because, immigrants have a lower unemployment rate than nonimmigrants. They are also involved more in the economy, which means that they're either working or looking for work but they make far less than nonimmigrants. Immigrants weekly income is roughly about $681 while non immigrants earn roughly about $837 a week or more. (Goldman, 2016)
Immigration is a major factor in the economy's ability to grow more jobs as well as to help the economy.
Below is a picture that shows women working in sweatshops making less than minimum wage.

Question: Why do immigrant men have a higher pay than women?

  1. Precious, you did a great job at stating the authors perspective and I liked how you connected what we learned in class to the film that we also watched. I also agree with you on the way that the media portrays immigrants especially women who are immigrants and get paid less then American citizens. But what is something that can be done to change this situation. Also you stated that immigrants are involved more in the economy, but make less. How is this possible?
